Te Ara Wānaka Boardwalk: Wānaka
Stage 3 of Queenstown Lakes District Council’s Wānaka Lakefront Development Plan includes the Te Ara Wānaka project – a shared pathway for pedestrians and cyclists that connects Wānaka’s Town Centre with the Marina. Some of the features include construction of a boardwalk running along the lakes edge, improvement of lawn areas and restoration and development of native vegetation. Working with Blakely Construction, Enviroscope provided the environmental management lead through tendering, design, and construction. This was a challenging site which involved protection of several iconic Wānaka environments including the Wānaka Spring, Bullock Creek and Roy’s Bay (Lake Wānaka).

This included works within the lakebed and therefore innovative thinking was required to provide isolated working platforms to protect several protected species including New Zealand Freshwater Mussels, the Southern-Crested Grebe and aquatic flora.
Enviroscope also designed and executed a water quality monitoring program during the works. This constrained site on Wānaka’s iconic waterfront required careful management of all environmental elements including erosion and sediment control, noise, vibration, contaminated soil, and heritage. The project achieved an excellent track record of environmental compliance from the Queenstown Lakes District Council.
